In Sales You Get What You Expect

If your mind is set, you will be unable to change your mindset. For example Christopher Columbus…

He was born in 1451 in Genoa, the son of a wool merchant and weaver. Do you recall what the conventional thinking or “Mindset” was about the shape of the globe at that time? It was believed to be flat. Not too many sailors sailed too far from shore fearing the worst. Columbus’ mind was set. It was set for taking risks and exploring new worlds.

Columbus discovered the New World on October 12, 1492 at 2:00 a.m. He changed his Mindset and we’re still celebrating his courage, boldness, and discoveries.

How you think is everything. For example - where are the obvious
places to look for new prospects for the products and services you sell? Make a list and go ask one of your competitors to do the same thing. Now compare lists. Hello - exactly the same. Surprise - surprise!

Now make another list and don’t tell your competition about this one. Make a list of all the un-obvious places you can go to find qualified prospects. Remember this is an un-obvious list and it requires a new and different mindset. It ain’t easy but it is good. It isn’t quick but it can be profitable for you. But first, you gotta remove the shackles on your conventional thinking.

You’ll get what you expect - so always expect the best to happen to you. Always be positive and expect the best. Only one person has the keys to your thoughts - you. Put a lid on all negative thinking. If it’s negative it’s usually related to a past experience.

There are three houses you can choose to live in past, present, and future. You can toss away the keys to the past and future houses. You can’t live there so there’s no reason for you to spend any time thinking about them.

Put all your energy in the house called “Present or Today.” When you wake up in the morning and don’t see your name in the obituary column, consider yourself lucky and do everything to make today a “Masterpiece.”

Expect the best in these situations:

1. You’re calling on your competitor’s best customer. Expect them to be receptive to your new ideas. Expect them to give you 1% of the business because they’re willing to see if you can earn even more.

2. You have an appointment with Charley Discount who enjoys beating salespeople up on their prices. Expect Charley to ease up on the pricing pressure because for the first time he really does see the “True Value” of the products and personalized services you provide. He’s even willing to add to the order to make it easier for you to justify better pricing to your sales manager.

3. You have a co-travel coaching day scheduled with your sales
manager. The last one turned a little ugly. Expect your travel day to be a positive experience. Your manager is helpful and encouraging - and even tosses a few compliments your way. And it happens because you expect it to happen. It starts with your expectations.

If you want anything to be better it always starts with your Mindset. Expect things to get better and they will.

If you expect them to get worse - they will and you won’t be
disappointed. Here’s the choice. You can expect the best or theworst but you can only choose one. Now really, isn’t this a No-Brainer for you.

Don’t try to succeed alone. Most salespeople don’t get this one. You shouldn’t think of yourself as a selling “Gladiator.” Success won’t come from your sword, in sales that’s your mouth, it comes from a steady flow of new sales and marketing ideas you can use to help solve your customer’s problems and grow your business.

The prescription for rigid thinking is a changing Mindset.

What Christopher Columbus did required “Radical thinking.” What kind of radical thinking would help you to outsmart your competition?

This isn’t about thinking - it’s about doing!

It’s not the first time I have been facilitating a workshop or group session and as early as the first break, other members of the group have asked me to deal with someone who is dominating the session.

How often have you been in a similar team setting and said to yourself…

“Why don’t they shut up for 5 minutes? They’re talking through a hole in their whatsit!”

What can make the situation worse? Those that just love to hear themselves talk…

  • Quite often are only repeating what someone else has said.
  • May not have the authority to speak.
  • May not have the expertise or any experience in the particular subject.
  • Even when not talking, are not listening - they are too busy thinking about what to say next
  • Will inhibit other team members from participating
  • Whatever you do don’t stop for breath. The slightest pause, even natural quiet times that occur in meetings are regarded as opportunities for the dominating team member to talk some more.

Seriously, these situations can be tricky. We want the whole team or group to participate in a balanced (not necessarily equal) way.

Moreover, depending on the team session, or team project, some team members may have more experience and expertise than others and we may need to depend on their expertise to move forward.

This dependency in itself can lead to another type of challenge which is covered in Managing Your Team (Part 4).

Leaving this dominating issue unresolved can definitely harm the overall effectiveness of the team. Over time, other participants will either attend team sessions reluctantly or find a “very good reason” not to attend at all. This will greatly damage the sense of team worth and teamwork.

What can make it tricky is that we want to deal with this without alienating the dominating participant - they are a member of the team and still have a valid and valued contribution to make to the overall success of the team and, therefore, their participation still needs to be encouraged.

So, how do we lead dominating team members?

  • If it’s a team meeting, group session, or project meeting for example, give everyone a chance to prepare. Using meeting management best practice, all participants are given the agenda in advance, asked to prepare their inputs depending on the subject matter. Team members will all also note that each of them have been given a certain time slot and a certain amount of time to give their inputs. It’s up to the team leader or facilitator to ensure the agenda is adhered to. We all do that anyway, right?
  • Play to their strengths. Recognise that a team member may have more experience and expertise than others and their inputs are valued but also emphasise that all team inputs are important.
  • We discussed “reluctant” participants in Managing Your Team (Part 2). So, without pointing the finger at “dominating” participants, it could be worthwhile running a team session which specifically discusses team participation, balance of participation, reaching consensus on the ‘rules’.
  • For those of you unfamiliar with the term gatekeeping, as team leader it well within your power to address the issue in situ by, for example, thanking the dominating team member for their contribution and emphasising that you would like to get inputs from other team members.
  • Use one of my preferred techniques - Brainstorming or another where you get members to write down their ideas, say top three, and then in a structured way, invite each team member to share their ideas with the rest of the team.
  • Managing Your Team (Part 4) will look at Disproportionate Amount of Influence.

    Crafting the Perfect Barbeque Pit

Cavemen weren’t always barbaric in their daily lives, between gathering food and knocking one and other over with big sticks they utilized the outdoor oven known as at barbeque pit. Our cave brothers knew what they were doing when they smoked turkey and chickens over the hot coals of the pit, they were unknowingly crafting a cooking method still utilized today. The barbeque pit is a great way to cook food, gather with friends, and create some spice to that boring yard of yours.

Barbeque pits are traditionally used by restaurants, cooking enthusiasts, and outdoorsmen, but they are becoming more popular in our backyards. The location of the barbeque pit is the first essential ingredient to making this outdoor oven work for you and your family. I wouldn’t recommend putting the barbeque pit in your front yard if you live on a busy street, the next door neighbors might think you’re trying to send smoke signals to the sky for rescue. Then again if you live on a farm, or ranch, a front yard barbeque pit might be just what the doctor ordered. The most logical way to pick a location for the barbeque pit is away from leaves, trees, and anything that can catch on fire. That being said it can also be a trendy looking landmark if you put it in the center of your backyard, as long as the pit won’t cause anything near it to catch fire.

Once you have selected the perfect location for your barbeque pit, it’s time to start digging. Typically you would want to dig about 5 feet into the ground, and create a circle big enough to house whatever size metal grill you will be topping your pit off with. Once the hole is dug you want to line it with wood, or charcoals of your choice. Be sure to choose the correct wood or coals because this is what will generate that smoked flavor. Many wood fanatics go for hickory or oak woods to burn in their pits, while charcoal is usually basic grocery bought coals.

You don’t need a toga and a wooden club to be able to cook on your new barbeque pit. Many get the idea that Neanderthal ovens are meant for Neanderthal foods, this is not the case. Feel free to toss on some vegan burgers, or exotic tilapia fish. Whatever is your delight will be cooked to perfection on your in ground barbeque pit.

The final step is making the pit a family friendly by adding wooden stools in a circular fashion a few feet back from the pit. This will take roasting marshmallows to the next level.

    Fundamentals in Place

    • There is a designated place for everything and everything is in its place. No time is wasted while looking for things. The organization looks clean and everyone is required, encouraged and motivated to keeping it organized.

    • The distance traveled by operator(s) and/or a specific part is less than the perimeter of the facility.

    • There are on-going reports easily assessable to everyone that provides timely feedback for individuals and groups.

    • Quality is achieved by controlling the process, not by checking parts. Rework and quality returns are rare occurrences.

    Evident Flow

    • Everyone is aware of the status of the subsequent operation/step.

    • There is a clearly visible, easy to follow path through all steps.

    • External set-up time has been eliminated and everyone follows consistent set-up procedures.

    Balanced Lines/Processes

    • Everyone is aware of and executes to takt time (pace of production required to match demand from the next operation/step).

    • To handle mix issues, the schedule is properly leveled to minimize the impact of both inventory and set up time. In addition, the required pitch (i.e. increments of work) is regularly determined for the pace maker operation/step.

    Pull vs. Push

    • There is one single point for scheduling (i.e. pace maker) - scheduling is not done at multiple or at every operation/step.

    • There is no or limited number of batch processes - whenever possible, a continuous flow. One key clue to look for is presence of inventory.

    • In spots where batching is necessary, FIFO pull system is in place with proper inventory levels. The amount of overall inventory (in equivalent number of days) should be approximately or slightly higher than the average of lead time (in days). Any discrepancy results in excess inventory and/or part shortage (which in turn impacts customer service level).

    • Customer service level is not directly impacted by forecast accuracy. There are no official “expeditors.”

    Organization Alignment

    • There is an acceptance for trying new ideas and concepts. Desire for continuous improvement is very strong. Maintaining status quo is not an option.

    • There is constant communication channel between workforce and the management. Award and recognition are based identifying, implementing and sustaining improvements (on time, quality, customer service and/or cost).

    • The workforce is empowered and motivated to self-direct daily operations/tasks with minimum input from management.

    • There are clear, proper, objective and timely measurements available for everyone to view. Any degradation is identified and addressed immediately.

Simply put, in a truly lean organization, each step in the entire value chain processes only what the subsequent step requires - this is done at the right time, in high quality and at the lowest cost possible. All seven types of waste have been identified and eliminated - the only remaining work should be those that are needed to change form/fit and/or function a customer is willing to pay for.

World Cup Goalkeepers - Fabien Barthez

Famous for his bald head, the son of a famous rugby player, 34-year-old Fabien Barthez is technically an excellent soccer player who could possibly have also made a career in an outfield position. Considered the top goalkeeper in France, he lost his place to Lyon’s Gregory Coupet after being banned for eight months (April-October 2005) for spitting at a referee.

A brawl erupted on the pitch after Marseille defender Frederic Dehu was sent off and the match was abandoned with 10 minutes left. Barthez, who had been substituted, got off the bench and confronted the referee. Fortunately for him, after long reflection, coach Raymond Domenech opted for the 77 times capped Barthez, who is also a veteran of the 1988 World Cup winning side.

It was reported in the French media that Domenech and his goalkeeper coach Bruno Martini chose Barthez over the 33-year-old Coupet because of his bigger experience at major events and his standing in the national team.

There is no doubt that Barthez can either be brilliant or sometimes a liability. When France won the World Cup in 1998, he only conceded two goals in seven games, but he has also made blunders, some of which were at club level for Manchester United.

Subsequent to the World Cup 1998, Barthez became a huge celebrity, almost a French equal of David Beckham.

Barthez started his career in professional football at Toulouse FC, joining Olympique Marseille in 1992 and winning the 1993 European Cup. He joined AS Monaco in 1995, winning the French League Championship and again in 2000.

Well known for his cavalier charges out of goal, he went on to join United for £7.8 million in May 2000, a British record for a goalkeeper, and won two Premiership titles at Old Trafford before returning to Marseille in August 2002 on loan. He quickly became a first choice during an exciting UEFA Cup run, securing a permanent move to his old club when he became a free agent in the summer of 2004.

“I just concentrate on myself. Since 1992, I’ve been playing for teams who enter a league season to win the title. I’ve had to question myself for almost the past 15 years,” said Barthez.

“I don’t think of the World Cup. I know everything goes fast, I know everything can change within 48 hours. That is why I have been focusing not only on my physical, but also mental training,” the former Manchester United goalkeeper said.

Barthez is France’s unquestioned starter in goal and, along with Zinedine Zidane, one of the most consistent pieces of the French team.

One of the questions I’m asked most often is what’s the best
option for advertising a web site, Pay Per Click adverts or
search engine optimising to achieve top crawled or “organic”
listings. My usual answer is “a combination of the two”. Both
have their uses and their own pros and cons. In this issue we
will focus on “Pay Per Click versus “Organic” Search Engine
Listings” and aim to give you some clear guidelines and business
scenarios to help you plan a successful, integrated campaign
that is tailored to your business goals and market situation.
What’s the difference? For those who aren’t quite clear what the
term “natural” or “organic” search engine-listing means, they
describe the “editorial” search results on any particular
engine. These results are professed to be non-biased - meaning
that the engine will not accept money to influence the rankings
of any individual sites. This is quite different than the paid
advertising (Pay Per Click) that appears in the “sponsored” or
“featured” results, in which higher positions are awarded to the
companies willing to pay the most per visitor or click. Why is
organic search important? Although paying for Pay Per Click
listings initially seems the obvious answer, organic search
listings are still very important to both searchers and web site
advertisers. Knowledgeable searchers, who understand the
difference between paid and organic results are more likely to
hold the natural results in a higher regard, much like a person
reading a newspaper or magazine would be more positively
influenced by an article about a particular product or service
than by a paid advertisement from the company that sells it. In
addition, organic results even the playing field. Companies or
individuals with smaller marketing budgets can complete with
larger organisations as the natural results are based on
relevancy to the search term rather than the amount you are
willing or able to pay for each click through to your web site.
What are the cons? Unfortunately, it takes a certain amount of
knowledge and programming skills to optimise for organic search
listings. It can also take a ridiculous length of time to be
indexed. It often takes anywhere from two days to as much as six
months to be listed on a search engine. Several weeks is the
norm, but you could get lucky and submit just a couple days
before an engine does a complete refresh of their database.

Which One Gets More Clicks? I am frequently asked “Which listing
type do searchers click on more often: natural “organic” search
engine results or paid “sponsored” adverts?” Recent studies have
confirmed my standard response, that the answer is a classic
    case of…it depends!

Searcher behaviour varies greatly depending on the demographics
of the searcher (men v women, experienced Internet users v
novices), the type of search a person is conducting
    (information-oriented v purchase-oriented) and the engine where
    the search is being conducted.

To reach the greatest number of potential customers and maximize
the results of your advertising campaign, you must be visible in
natural organic results AND sponsored listings.

Here are six possible scenarios to help you prioritise and
decide which path(s) to follow when setting up your search
    engine marketing campaign:

    1. Limited Advertising Budget If budgets are tight or
nonexistent and you can’t afford to pay for website visitors,
even after taking into account the value of their desired online
action, you will want to place a great deal of emphasis on
effectively implementing search engine optimisation in-house. If
you don’t already have the knowledge or skills to implement
this, download our invaluable guide to optimising your web site
for both organic search engine listings and visitor use here:
    “Start at the Beginning”:
    http://www.enable-uk.co.uk/html/book_2.html

    2. Website That Can’t Be Modified Optimisation for organic
search engine listings typically involves modifying a site’s
design, content, and navigation. For example, heavy reliance on
Flash, frames, or graphics may need to be changed in order to
incorporate more optimised text. However, some businesses feel
that an optimised website does not provide the multi-media
experience their customers require or expect. If your business
falls into this category, then Pay Per Click advertising may be
the only way to achieve good results.

    3. Need Immediate Results A basic Pay Per Click campaign on
Overture or Google can be up and running and driving visitors to
your web site in a matter of hours. Significant improvement in
organic rankings may take several months to achieve. If you
require immediate results Pay Per-Click advertising will need to
    be your top priority.

    4. Guaranteed Top Placement No-one can guarantee consistent, top
organic listings for high volume key phrases in a competitive
market sector. Search engines change their algorithms (indexing
criteria) regularly and no one can control how or when sites are
indexed, except the individual search engine itself. If you
absolutely must guarantee consistent top placement on
high-volume keywords in a competitive market sector, you will
need to rely heavily on Pay Per Click advertising and have
sufficient budget to fund it. Investigate current bid rates, can
you afford top placement on the highest-volume words? If not,
expand your keyword list beyond the most obvious and popular key
phrases and advertise across a larger number of less popular,
more specific and cost-effective phrases. Remember that most
searchers enter two or three words to form a key phrase rather
    than a single word.

For a complete guide to setting up and managing your Pay Per
Click campaign, download our guide: “Maximising Your Pay Per
Click Campaign” read an excerpt here:
    http://www.enable-uk.co.uk/html/book_5.html

Ultimately, focus on the keywords that work best and achieve the
best conversion rates and the highest return on investment
(ROI). For more detailed advice on how to measure your
conversions and ROI, download our guide: “Measuring Success”,
    read an excerpt here:
    http://www.enable-uk.co.uk/html/book_6.html

    5. A Need To Change Advert Content or Timing If you need to
frequently change the content of your adverts, for example to
promote particular products or to make seasonal offers, or if
you want to be able to turn your advertising on and off, you
will need to rely on the control and flexibility offered by Pay
    Per Click advertising.

6 Ad-Adverse Audience More Internet savvy search engine users
recognise information that is displayed as a purchased advert
and this limits its credibility. In this case the integrity
associated with a high natural ranking is invaluable. If your
target market is likely to be Internet wise (IT professionals,
students, etc), optimisation should be your main focus.

The above guidelines will help you assess the relative priority
of optimisation and Pay Per Click advertising, but how should
you implement each method? Simultaneously or one at a time?

Generally speaking I would recommend that you start the Pay Per
Click campaign slightly before the optimisation of your web
site. The immediacy of a Pay Per Click campaign will bring you
visitors in the short term, and more importantly it will also
allow you to measure what is (and is not) working on your web
site; are the landing pages for your adverts converting your
visitors, are you targeting the most effective keywords, etc.

Armed with the results of this testing you can optimise your web
site effectively and avoid costly delays that occur while
waiting for search engines to re-crawl newly optimised pages.
Only when you are completely happy that your web site is the
best it can be should you submit it to the search engines.

When these organic listings start to bring visitors to your web
site, you can re-evaluate you Pay Per Click spend. It may be
that your ROI on these adverts is acceptable and you continue as
is, or you may wish to reduce your advertising spend. A quick
calculation on your conversion rates should give you the answer.
For more information see our guide: “Measuring Success”, read an
    excerpt here: http://www.enable-uk.co.uk/html/book_6.html

Today, most marketers accept that web site optimisation for
organic listings and Pay Per Click advertising is not an
either/or proposition. For a well-rounded and effective search
marketing campaign that reaches the greatest number of
searchers, marketers should blend both natural and paid
listings, capitalising on their complementary strengths and
    weaknesses.

    What is the Higher Self?

Are we just a body with a personality? From my understanding, we are much more than that. Each one of us has a higher aspect. This higher aspect has been typically called the Higher Self. If I am not wrong, others have also referred to it as the oversoul or overself.

Who and what is the Higher Self? From my experience, the Higher Self is the intelligence and wisdom aspect of our own self. Ironically, the Higher Self is impersonal and does not have a ’sense of self’ like the way our personality is. Nevertheless, it serves as a guiding aspect for the personality or ego.

Can this elusive higher self be contacted? Yes and typically it is done through meditation or some other altered states of consciousness.

A little bit about me. Back in the late 1990s, I discovered that if I am thinking hard about a subject that is of a spiritual inquiry, I will sometimes receive visions that attempt to answer my queries. Mostly the visions are symbolic. Higher self will communicate by impulsing symbols and visions that form messages into my awareness.

    An example of such transmissions:

Some years ago, I was contemplating on the nature of the cycle of reincarnation. Will lost souls be forever looped within the lower realm? (According to many Eastern Beliefs, Beings who had not attained enlightenment will be caught in a vicious circle of perpetual birth and rebirth.) Suddenly, out of nowhere, I received a transmission from beyond my conscious mind. It came as a ‘package’… like a burst of images/symbols and moods. Very fast, split second impressions. The package seemed to be received by the right hemisphere of my brain. My brain instinctively attempted to interpret the transmission before I lose it. How do I know it wasn’t my imagination? Well, firstly I do not think in pictures. I think in languages; English, Mandarin, etc. Secondly, the transmitted images were performing a ‘dual-split’ to my consciousness. That is, the images are simultaneously overlaying my visual perception of the environment around me. Well, a ‘dual-split’ in consciousness is definitely not the usual way my mind works!

The animated vision was set against a light blue background. There were rings or bands of a lighter colour moving towards a centre point. Because the transmission was so fast, I think I might had lose some vital information. Anyway, here’s my interpretation. Please understand that it was my physical brain that did this interpretation. As such I can never be to sure about the accuracy of my interpretation:

“The transmission is attempting to correct errors or rather incompleteness within my understanding of the scheme of things. The cycle of reincarnation is never meant to last forever. Eventually all will return back to the Source or essence. “

Well, that transmission was many years ago. My understanding on that matter has been refined since then. However, the transmission was appropriate (to my level of understanding) at that time.

Over the years, these vision transmissions from Higher Self, together with the guidance of Enlightened Physical Teachers, have helped me to understand the dynamics consciousness and the universe greatly.

    Thank you for reading.

She loved the book so much she wouldn’t even put it down to read her AR books for school. I had to force her to read the books for school. Great job!!!!

Lee Edward Fodi has been writing and illustrating stores about magic, monsters and meddlesome animals for as long as he can remember. Growing up on a farm, he harbored childhood aspirations for taking over the family business. Unfortunately, this dream came to an abrupt end when he accidentally ran the tractor over his dad’s outhouse (thankfully, his dad was not inside at the time). Fodi currently lives and works in Vancouver, Canada. He studied at the University of British columbia and has a degree in Engllish Literature, and a diploma in Fine Arts.

Tiger woods has a wonderful golfer’s brain wouldn’t you agree?

There is a story of how he won his first major tournament. He played on a very difficult course and he knew it would be very difficult to win. So, he did some home work.

He studied the course and realized that most if not all of the holes were on greens that sloped from the back to the front.
In other words, if he shaped his golf swing to hit his ball past the hole, he would have a difficult down hill put to finish with.

    So, what did he do?

When he hit his ball onto a green, he made sure the ball finished below the hole.
This meant he had an up hill put and so was able to attack the hole.

Putting down hill from the other side of the hole was a slow dribble of a put with no authority, and the ball was at the mercy of any inconsistency on the way to the hole that would put it off line.

He won his tournament, and displayed a wonderful example of how professionals think during a round of golf or even before one.

They put the ball where they have the best approach to their next destination, and finally their best approach to the flag.

There by hangs a tail. When you play a round of golf, you have to determine where you want the ball to be so that you can have a clear shot for your next attack on the green in front of you.
You make your golf swing accordingly.

You tee up on the side of trouble and hit away from it.

You place your ball in the best strategic position before each green to enable you to hit the ball as near to the pin as possible.

You have to think your way around the course, and also, take a leaf out of Tiger’s book and leave your ball below the hole if the hole is on a slope.

Do it now. Start your new golfing life.
